Storytelling is discussed more and more today. But what does this craft involve, and why is it important to master it?
Stories have been part of our lives since ancient times. As children, we listened eagerly to fairy tales; today, perhaps we are the ones telling them to children in a captivating way. Can you remember being completely absorbed in a story, waiting in suspense to discover what happened next? Perhaps you even imagined that you were one of the characters. That sense of identification is precisely where the power of stories lies. A good storyteller can also tell them in a way that turns listening into an unforgettable experience. But how can you apply this skill in marketing?
As I mentioned above, stories evoke emotion. What more could you ask for? The right emotion sparks a client’s interest and gives you a unique opportunity to show what sets you apart. Draw your audience into a powerful, entertaining and informative story. They will remember how it made them feel and form a clear association with your brand or presentation. In other words, storytelling is an effective tool that gives your communication a distinctive voice and helps you win clients over.
So where can storytelling be used in marketing?
Almost anywhere—from product descriptions and social media to articles, presentations, videos and sales strategy.
Most importantly, every story must be authentic and genuinely credible. Ideally, clients should be able to identify with them easily. It is equally important to tell your stories consistently in a recognisable voice, so that clients associate this distinctive style of communication with you.
Before you begin shaping your own story, let us summarise a few principles that will make the process easier:
- Be clear about who you want to tell the story to and adapt your tone accordingly. The client should be the hero of your story—make sure they genuinely feel that way.
- Be minimalist and avoid unnecessary complexity —there is beauty in simplicity.
- Use relevant data —they add authenticity and distinguish your narrative from a fairy tale.
- Be creative, but never at the expense of honesty.
- State your most important idea first to capture the client’s attention from the outset.
